a little NFL fun..
Since I love football, especially NFL and the Superbowl is in Indy this year, I thought maybe this Indiana native {I am NOT a Hoosier} would entertain you with a little NFL fun.
I sat with my man and the mancub tonight and this mom rocked the game! Only missed four... let me know if you top me.
This was in the latest edition of our electric company's newsletter. Enjoy! Answers will be posted later.
I'll even give you a clue to get you started... once again, my beloved Colts are on the bottom!

how to make a snowman...
It was a brownish greenish Christmas... definitely not the white Christmas I always hope for. Of course, tomorrow the forecast calls for 4-7 inches of that lovely white stuff that I {heart} much!
Ellen and I figured out how to make adorable snowmen without any snow on the ground. We went and bought several containers of Mentos gum and peeled the labels off. We saved the gum for later...
After taking the labels off, Ellen gave each snowman its eyes, mouth and buttons with black puff paint and an orange carrot nose with orange paint.
After the paint dried, she dressed each snowman with a scarf made from ribbon or yarn and a pom-pom for their hat.
She gave these as gifts to her friends for their small keepsakes. While her friends really liked their homemade snowman, Ellen's friend, Mallory, wondered why Ellen didn't just leave the gum inside.
I guess next time we make snowmen, we will be sure to leave the gum intact!

violet jelly
Because my phone went in the laundry on one particularly bad Saturday morning... and because I still haven't spent the money on a new camera (am using an old phone that takes lousy pictures), I have no pictures of this great idea to show you. I'm so glad Prairieland Herbs has pretty pictures... just pretend my pictures would have looked just like theirs.
Last week while at a softball game, a few of us moms were talking and one of my friends mentioned that her family had made violet jelly that week. I thought it sounded intriguing and so I did a little internet searching and found this recipe, complete with directions and pretty pictures... http://www.prairielandherbs.com/violetjelly.htm
I couldn't find liquid pectin at our local Kroger store, so I looked a little further and found this recipe at Cooks.com... http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1723,146174-249197,00.html
By combining the pictures and directions of the first recipe and the ingredients in the second recipe, we were able to make violet jelly yesterday. It has A LOT of sugar in it and thus, it is very sweet! And, in Ellen's words "it's delectable on toast!"
It also looks pretty in the little jelly jars that I had left over from years ago. I'm planning on using it for gifts in the coming year and may even make another batch before the violets all disappear.

glow sticks... who knew?
Last night we had a doozy of a storm here in Northern Indiana... tornado sirens... torrential downpour... thunder... and, no electricity for 3 hours.
One of the joys of having big kids (as opposed to little people) is that sometimes they actually think on their own... and sometimes it is nothing short of amazing!
As we were gathering items to take to the basement in response to the tornado sirens (including two not-very-willing dogs), our electricity began to blink off.... While gathering our things, we grabbed a few flashlights as well.
Once settled in our dungeon, 11 year old, Emily, says "here Mom, I grabbed my glow sticks!" Ingenious! Seriously, we all turned off our flashlights and grabbed and snapped a few glow sticks. For less than $1, we all each had a couple of glow sticks in our hand... much cheaper than C or D batteries for the flashlights and just as easy to see by....
So... my plan is to go to our local dollar store and stock up on glow sticks... not only do they provide light in the darkness... they make storms more fun... who knew?
