what would you say?

I have a friend who is considering pulling her son out of public school and homeschooling him.  He's been in kindergarten and my friend never, EVER thought she would consider homeschool as an education option.  However, things are not going well and my friend is less than satisfied with her son's current education.

Okay all of you homeschooling moms out there... what advice would you give my friend?

  1. I would say if she's considering it, then GO FOR IT. Especially since he's still so young, NOW is the time to see if it's for them. Join a homeschool support group. Read books on relaxed homeschooling. Enjoy and SAVOR this time. This may be a nudge from God for her to go ahead.

  2. I'm not a homeschooling mom, but I would say that a mom knows their child. If she thinks that she can give her child what he needs, go for it. As long as she is capable of doing it, why not. Now me, on the other hand, I know my limits. That is one of them.,,

  3. If you are feeling led to homeschool, then there is probably a good reason. Don't look at it as a 12 year commitment. It always helped me to remember we could reevaluate it at the end of each year.

  4. As someone who works in the public school system and teaches at a homeschool co-op (how's that for a combo?!) I would encourage her to pray....talk to the teacher....make a list of what her concerns are...evaluate if she is able to meet the needs....be the advocate her child needs her to be. It's a huge decision that I've watched many friends struggle with. Blessings to your friend as she seeks the Lord and the best for her precious child.

  5. If the thoughts are there, there's a reason for them. :) I never, ever thought I'd homeschool either - yet, here I am! And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Do you change your blog every day?! I swear, every time I visit, it's got a new look - always great!

  6. I would encourage her to follow her heart. I wish I had sooner. I thought other people knew what was best for my children, but I was wrong. It's probably easier to start now, when he is in Kindergarten. My children still compare home school to public school, and there is so much I wish I could "undo" - but it's just going to take years.

  7. Heidi,
I would encourage her to know the WHY behind her decision to homeschool. Without it, she'll be quickly discouraged and tempted to quit. She'll need to keep her purpose ever before her on the good days and the bad.
